Daniel Chamlee has racing in his blood. His grandfather, Thomas Newton loved to design, fabricate and race boats. Tom has many championship titles and still holds many records. Dan loves to go speed, but mostly he loves the challenge of designing and fabricating parts & proving that they work. His father just happened to be a welder so building parts was 2nd nature growing up in a steel shop. Dan’s first car at 15 was a Baja bug he built from the pan up. He has designed and built many unusual street legal 4x4’s and custom cars.
Dan has spent years going to races studying the many different classes and styles. He read the SCORE rulebook from cover to cover until he had nearly memorized it in order to understand the advantages and disadvantages in each class before he began his own truck. Dan has a gift for understanding how things work. By trade he is an appliance repairman and knows the inside and out of every domestic appliance made. He often has technicians from competing businesses call him when they are stuck on a problem. Because they know he’ll know the answer.
Dan spent many hours sketching different options for suspension before beginning his work. Once he had decided he took an old service truck with 350,000 miles on it and a blown engine and began the transformation. He would spend a long day repairing appliances then come home in the evening and work all night on the truck. And then go to work again the next day. Each step brought new and exciting challenges. Often he would spend hours just thinking through the next process. His biggest thrill is seeing his ideas implemented. Now that he has a few seasons under his belt he loves knowing that the suspension he has designed and built is very competitive.
Dan has enjoyed the time he has spent with his sons and daughters, each learning and contributing with their own strengths and many sleepless nights.

Just got back from winning the baja 500 (3rd year in a row) had a blast truck ran great all day...no major problems. The motor started blowing oil at contingency so we did a quick run over to ojos, blew out 2 quarts in 45miles.. durring the race we were putting in 4 quarts of oil in at every pit stop and had to stop a couple times in between to top off as well, should have some on board cam footage up soon. .. cant wait for primm!

As the team headed to compete in the 40th annual Baja 500 they wondered if they could win it a third time in a row. Due to a family wedding Dan was unable to pre-run. On Friday most of the group was able to run the first section to Oso's. This section was a concern since the gps downloads don't have this section and usually the course markers are gone coming back into town at the end of the race. We have gotten lost a few times and we didn't want to waste any time. On race morning Laurie hopped in the truck to start warming it up and the starter stuck, horrible grinding noises came from the starter. We couldn't believe it last year we had starter problems on race morning and were almost late to the start. We were able to fix the problem and head to the start on time.
Dan went off the line first and never saw another class 7 all day long. The chase crew only saw 2 class 7's at Osos road crossing. At race mile 80 Dan pulled over to see why he had no oil pressure. It was three quarts low. We radioed ahead to the BFG pits to request that they check oil at each pit. We were putting 4-5 quarts in at each pit, we'll be tearing the engine down now to see what's causing the oil burning. But fortunately the engine never missed a beat. The truck ran beautifully all day long. The crew was impressed at how much smoother the truck ran after they spent a day a few months ago in Barstow with King Shocks testing and adjusting the shocks and spring rates. Dan was able amazed how fast he was able to drive the truck, our suspension has always been good, he couldn't believe how much more control he had in the rough stuff, and it was able to absorb the bigger bumps and not pound the suspension even though he was going considerably faster.
We were hoping to get some footage of the truck on the course along the stretch parrelling the freeway before Valle de Trinidad. But unfortunately the chase truck on the freeway was unable to keep up with the race truck in the whoop to do's parrelling the freeway.
Dan had no problem through the nasty silt near Urapan. Driving there through day light really helped. The truck ran out of gas only a few miles from the finish line. The crew was scrabbling trying to get to him, when he radioed that he was able to prime it and get it started. We found the wash so if he ran out again we could get to him, fortunately he made it the rest of the way on fumes. We figure it cost us about a 1/2 hour of time. We ran the course in 12:43:33 with an average mph of 34.67. The second place class 7 was 6 hours, 7 minutes and 2 seconds behind us. What an amazing race! Some challenging sections, some fast sections, but as always many beautiful sections of Baja. Baja at it's finest!
This win puts the factory racing back in first place toward the season championship, two more events to go.
The Factory Racing would like to thank the following for there help: Dan Chamlee, Thomas Chamlee, Laurie Chamlee, Amy Tate, Jessy Van Hoy, Ian Graham, Jake Spear, David Owen, AJ Denunzio, Jeremy Priestman.
Stay tuned: Primm 300 in September and Baja 1000 in November.

because that allows both coilover and bypass to top and bottom at the exact same point using all stroke of both shocks.

truck is back on the trailer and headed to tech. top speed on the radar gun was 77mph(at that point we ran out of motor, not suspension) we didn't have the gps on the truck yet.

re radared scotty stineburger in his tt at 85mph but his gps said 90..

so now we are not sure how accurate that 77 is.. it could be a little higher will have to see once we have the correct rearend gear ratio and have the motor re dynoed.

thanks. if your at the 500 come check it out in person, with the body on it should be even more impressive.

is there anyway we can move this thread into the racer profiles instead of just being in the 7open discussion? or are u not a mod on here as well?

14in coilover and 18in bypass and both shocks top and bottom at the EXACT same time allowing for maximum travel. if we were to run both shocks at the same angle we would have lost 3-4in of travel. This is the exact same way our old truck was set up and it has not caused any issues over the last 7 years of racing so we have continued to use the same geometry in our new truck. i know that a lot of people are caught up in the idea of not past 90* at bump, but with a 4.0 6 tube bypass shock it makes NO difference on the way the truck drives, the coil is just there to establish ride height there is almost no valving in that shock anyways.

that way we can run the same coilvover front and rear and if needed we could steal shocks off the old truck and run them.

we got it from Mckensies and i am totaly blanking on the name of it right now but its VERY reasonably priced and it was easy to mount and works amazing the truck handles so flat its almost scary. we were in barstow yesterday pitching the truck sideways threw 2-3 ft whoops at 70mph and it still felt flat.
