I think he is trying to say that school is expensive as fuck and the chances of getting a good job after graduating are not very good. I could have interpreted this wrong though?

If your parents are paying for school and you will never see the bill I guess let them, but if you have to pay for your own school like most people, when it comes to being a mechanic, paying for Wyotech or UTI is a waste of money in my opinion. Back when I was your age, you could just get a job as a mechanics apprentice and learn as you go and eventually be a master tech. Most the people I talk to who hire Wyotech and UTI grads, say they are useless. I'm suprized people still hire them.

Pick another career. Being a mechanic will beat you up and leave you tired by the time you are 40. Working on cars is cool, but do some job shadowing or something.

Well i start uti in July. I have a college fund that my parents started way back. I've heard of the people that come out of uti and wyotech that don't know shit, but I've also been working on cars since I was little, I've restored a 64 bonneville. I know a thing or two about cars. So Im not one of those pretty boys that goes there trying to get a good job and then can't even change their own oil.

I'm sure most of the kids that go to those schools have been working on cars all their lives. You won't understand what I'm talking about until your older.

If you've been working on cars your whole life then uti will be useless to you, the education program they have is for the person who know absolutley nothing about cars. I only tell you this by my own mistake, as I went to that place. The only thing I learned was how the automatictransmision works, that's it. I learned just as much by watching the power block on spike tv. Instead of going to that school, ask your parents if you can invest the money in tools. That is something a mechanic always needs, and they hold value. When I had interviews for being a tech, one question was Always "how many tools do you have?" you will have better luck as starting assomeones helper in a shop. Also, like others said, the auto industry is really hurting right now and most techs I know can barely afford the fuel to get to work. That's notbecause of a lack of knowledge or experience, it's because people aren't spending money on their cars lik they used to.

the auto ind is shit right now.. do you not see or read that.
also. if you have been working on cars. UTI is going to be pointless and really boring for you and a waist of 20-30K

go to a dealer right now and see what you can do, and save your money.

trust me.. your still young, ive worked on cars for 15 years now, didnt really learn much, did i learn, yes. but all uti does is... gives you a paper saying you went to a well known school,

so IMHO would i tell anyone to go to that school. no.
why- its a peace of paper saying you passed some classes.
go to a Jr college, take an auto program there, and get an AA or BA while you are there, it shows you actually did work

I am not arguing your logic because i dont know how the auto repair business works too much, but in other fields just having a piece of paper saying you graduated from a university and have a degree is enough to make you more valuable to an employer than someone with more knowledge without a degree.

Anyway, lets get back to the build.

last thing... the dealers "make" you think your more valuable. some places do care you have a UTI paper and some places dont is it work 20K IMO no its not. most dealers will send you to their own training program, so the paper gets you in the door.. thats a pretty expensive paper...

back to the build, i want to see more work on the front.

Check the community colleges around you if you are dead set on having a piece of paper that says you know how to work on cars. I've read that many places will instantly take you out of contention for a job if you claim UTI or Wyotech. But some schools like Cerritos have programs that are endorsed by the major manufacturers and are even connected to local dealerships to help with job placement right off the bat. Plus, it's cheaper.

UTI works. I am a great example. You will only get what you put into life. Jeff you cant say you know how it is, you kind of gave up on your career to work and a pizza joint.... just saying dude... your opinion is kind of flawed.

back to build. i did a little work, finding the exact mounting postions of the beams, i think i found full bump..i have it set here, so that i dont have to make a new engine cross member. what do you think? should i go with more bump? im just using the stock fenders to see where the tire fits front to back.

just the engine mounts bug me, i can make them no problem, but getting the engine to sit in the same spot is what im afraid of.
i may actually only need to cut the sides off of the back side, then i can box it in.

got one radious arm completely welded after looking at a friends. it was really simple, i had the main tubes welded up, and so i stuck the arm in the notcher, and made sure it was level, and notched thru both tubes, that way they were perfectly straight. i cut another 1 3/4 tube 5 1/2" long and stuck it there. then just welded the plates like the pictures show.

i need to make different rad arm mounts that dont sit under the frame but rather off the side so they dont hit the frame.
can someone post pictures of mounts that are below and to the side of the frame. either tube or plate mounts.

i though of just flipping the mounts dave gave me and then adding 1" tubes to support it.

Just weld a flate plate off the other side of the radius arm mount and put a triangle gusset in there so it dosent try to roll over.

Better you putting that money into something like this that is self rewarding and gratifying, rather than some university douchebag blowing it on CL and blow.

I spend every minute I have on this truck. If I'm not working on it I'm thinking of what I need to do next, such as the engine cage.

Just a reminder, the further out you mount the radius arms the more likely the tires will rub on them.

I put a kick in mine and gained about an inch clearance, which I have no idea what that translates into actual turning radius

driver side front shock mounts are almost done, just need some shock bosses and different lower mounts.
    full bump

    full droop

and the tire does rub on the radius arm no matter where it is mounted.

can anyone tell me the spring sizes i need? the shock is a 2.5"x16" the weight i know is 500 over 600.

    thanks

Build looks awesome man! im jealous! how much caster did you account for in the rad arms? its probably just the angle of the picture, but the "kpi" on that beam end looks to be quite a bit in the (-)

Looks like you have a little room. As long as your moving it around, move it in till the coils almost rub.

My coilovers are mounted further out on the beams so I'm able to have the sort of angle you probably want. My ratio is 550 or 500 over 700. I can look if you really care.

If he mounted the radius are on the inside of the frame it would hit the frame at bump.

question on steering...can i use a rack and pinion with cross over steering? it would be stronger than the stock steering box, right?
