well my good buddy keith started building his truck last week and i took some pics to share. the plans are a bumper to bumper cage, 3.0's all around, motor and trans upgrades, 37's, 9", custom beams and radius arms. the truck will be a daily driver/prerunner/chase truck.

steve, does this truck look familiar?

heres some shots of the cage progress. he has yet to start on any of the suspension. the kit thats on it will be removed.

looking good, I plan on building a sub frame when I build my cab cage, seems like the best route to go. as far as dropping the cage down so you can weld all the way around the tubing.

Great pictures, thanks for posting them. I really like the pictures showing the subframe. You guys make it look easy. Will he keep the stock dash? How many hours do you have into bending/welding it up?
    Thanks again for sharing.

When the tubing goes through the back of the cab, on the top, are you welding the tube to the cab? I thought I recall the Trophy Tacoma being like that. Should you do that?
I have came to the conclusion that evolution will soon (next 10k yeras + -) remove the second eye on the halabit for a higher bodily efficiency. Having two eyes on a flat surface does little for its vision but widen it's radius slightly. It seems that it is simply not useful for this fish.

no, i dont think he'll be welding the tubes to the cab. they just break out over time. i think he'll just be putting some RTV up on the inside. but we'll see what he wants to do....

    Helton,
Did you help build this? Looks nicely built!

A couple of questions just out of curiosity.

Did they come up short with the tubes off of the back of the main hoop out the cab on purpose? Why? Are the sleeved tubes out the back of the cab going to the frame welded all the way around at the joint inside of the cab?

Any idea why they didn't they push the subframe tight up against the bottom of the cab to create more of an angle for attachment to the frame? It's hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like the supports for the subframe will be perpendicular to the frame rather than angled? In one pic, looks like the front of the subframe attaches to the frame at a negative angle? Mabey just the pic?

Josh.........i helped a bit today, but it basically all the work has been done by my friend Keith that owns the truck now.

the placement of the sleeved joints in the upper rear corners were executed as planned. the sleeves are welded 80% around in the cab corners.(cant get the top 1/4" or so) they are also rossetted on both pieces as you can see.

as far as the angle of the subframe......i dont know. all i do know is that there will be many more tubes connecting the subframe to the rails, as well as about 4 or so more tubes going down diaginaly(sp) from the A and C pillar tubes to the frame rails.

my friend is a very smart guy and has experience. i do not doubt his skills. he has built many trucks and buggies. once he gets all the tubes in there it will be good. he will also be plating the cage to the cab in places as well.

but also, this is not going to be a race truck, just a chase/prerunner/daily driver.

im no ford guy so all this subframe business is greek to me. lol

Never doubting the work, just curious. Thanks for answering the ?s Helton.
I hear ya on tie-ing the subframe and C & A pillars to the frame, I expected as much from anyone who knows you son.

From the pictures it looks as though the subrame is actually perpendicular to the frame.

And Josh, if I understand you right, where the front of the subrame attachs to the actual frame, if I remember correctly, it is perfectly straight at that point and not at an angle.

From the pictures it is hard to tell from all the diff. angles and such, but the truck looks as though it is coming together very nicely. I like the idea of the subframe, it takes talent just to build one and build one effectively.

Great job and keep us posted matt!

the reason the tubes coming from the back of the truck into the cab are welded and rosette welded is because you cant "drop" the cage down to weld all the way around the rest of the welds if the back is going through a hole in the cab....so when they had it all welded up they tied those two rear tubes in through the cab and welded them up....its kinda like dont drop the cage to weld all the tops of the cage tubes...or drop it and get everything welded allt eh way around but have to splice the rear tubes in like they did.....get it....they did it correctly
