    Default TaylorRacing's 1986 Toyota

here is a cliff notes version of the original build thread which is located on Socaltundras.com
    10/1/09

ok so quick recap for people that have been here for the start and people who are just tuning in.

Truck started life as an 1986 single cab 2wd. at one point it was turned into a desert truck around 1999. remained street legal til 2002. it then sat in the back yard of some guys house in Barstow til 2004. Sold then too a guy in San Bernadino as a prerunner project. Guy lost interest and ended up starting to part the truck out. all the interior, rear suspension, windows etc..

Found the truck for sale on DR, as a parts truck or possible trade. Figured what the hell, offered up my beat down baja bug as trade. Next thing i know i'm towing home my new truck!

here is one add that when the guy was trying to sell the front end.. Caution the engine cage is scary lol.

Toyota front end. King, Camburg. - DezertRangers.com

So i picked the truck up with part of a cab cage, a makeshift front end and bare chassis in the rear.

So we decided to build the entire rear of the truck in a week. Yes a week of after hour hell! Working full 8-9 hour days and then driving to the shop till the wee hours in the morning. LoL Had never herd the motor run let alone drove it under its own power.

I will state this now for the record. I didn't build this truck alone, with out the help and dedication of my best friends it wouldn't be where it is today.

this is how it started life:

So having a raw truck and then smashing through the salten sea, isnt the best idea. She came back orange. Too much elbow gease and i'm still not done. here is what the intire cage looked like

Got the rear done and Linseed oil applied.

Still waiting to get a real bumper. Dont have many fab tools left, and friends with fab tools have normal lives unlike my crazy schedule lol so i havent been able to line a weekend up to take care of the last couple things

22R blew up shortly after these vids were shot

it sounds honestly like someone is hitting the valve cover with a screw driver. that gets louder when i rev it up a little. After i did the timing chain i made sure to cycle it to make sure there was no screw ups and it felt fine going through the cycle. but the same knocking is there from the desert. i am just pissed at how much money i have put into this motor with the amount of power i got out of it. since i no longer have any ambitions of racing it in a limited class it was probably pointless on building up this motor the way i did. so im weighing options right now...

ok guys lets play the guessing game!

yea it fires up fine, so fuel is not an issue, timing was a little off but the noise was still there. Its the orginal noise that made me shut it down in the first place. So i have people telling me bottom end and there are people saying top.. Lc say main bearing. Personally think bent valve. But what do i know.

    Compression
    1. 130psi 2.165psi 3.135psi 4.140psi

Seems as though my rings are a little wore out as well. Lc said normal good compression or around 175 in all cylinders. But it doesnt matter as of right now. I believe i might have found a guy that can do it for a reasonable price. i'm just gonna have him go through the whole motor and i'll buy what ever he feels is wore out. So thats means truck is most likely done for the season. but its all good gives me some time to save a little cash and then finish the rest of the little odds an ends.
Motor is toast... Needs Crank, Bearings, rods, pistons, valves.... Fml bye bye 22r....

    Updated, Upgraded, Still Toyota DNA!

7M-GTEThe turbocharged 7M-GTE was produced from 1986 to 1992. Output was 232 hp (173 kW) at 5600 rpm and 240 ft·lb (325 N·m) at 4000 rpm for most 5 psi (0.34 bar) versions. It was Toyota's top performance engine until it was replaced by the 2JZ-GTE.

A special 7M-GTEU version, with a modified CT26 high-flow turbocharger and large volume intercooler, pushed output to 267 hp (199 kW) at 5600 rpm and 264 ft·lb (358 N·m) at 4400 rpm. This was used only in the racing homologation Toyota Supra Turbo A road and race cars. The Turbo A models also measured air based on manifold pressure rather than using an air flow meter, had a larger intercooler, larger throttle body, optimized CT-26 turbo, and various other differences. It was the fastest Japanese car at the time.

The 7M-GTE was known to suffer from blown head gaskets due to improper torque specifications of the head bolts from the factory. Despite endless claims to this problem and obvious proof of a design error, Toyota never took responsibility or issued a recall. This problem could easily be prevented by the backyard mechanic by removing the valve cover and re-torquing the head bolts to a higher torque specification. It is recommended to replace the head gasket and torque the head bolts to 75 lbs.

    Specifications:

Displacement: 2,954 cc (180.3 cu in)
    Bore: 83.0 mm (3.27 in)
    Stroke: 91.0 mm (3.58 in)
    Compression Ratio: 8.4:1
    Weight: 210 kg (463 lb)

So far everything is looking healthy in the motor. Its torn down already! Head looks good, block just needs a fresh hone and rings so far. should be an easy fix! So far free goodies with the motor are RC engineering 550cc injectors, and believed to be arp head studs. everything else apears to be stock which is good!

    Turbo!

Ok so for those who arent in the loop, i am trying to track down a cam position sensor. i'll be damned if i have to spend $500 for one.

Also, whats the process of changing a non-op reg back to street reg? anyone know how complicated it is. i can handle smog, but do i need to get everything inspected? With the new motor being built i need to find a way to put some good miles on it before it gets un-leashed in the dirt. but with the truck being a green sticker vehicle im at a loss on how to achieve this, without putting it back on the street for some up and down the coast driving.

Have some big plans for this truck now. Its time to work on the civilness of the over all look. In other words the truck is going to be aluminum paneled. My boy Glen at GR-fab in chula vista does amazing panel work. and after seeing a ranger he did yesterday i am starting to collect cans so i can have my truck done the same way. Dude is another toyota fanatic and has some serious street credit in my book. have seen him weld an intire 7 truck front end back together half way through the 1k in the dirt with a home depo nascar welder. Truck finished too!

Any ways, progress is a little slow but my work is picking back up again so i can start throwing parts at this again. should have the bellhousing taken care of by next week. Then after that just waiting to hear back on the bottom end on what bearings we are going to replace. If everything can come together correctly i might have a motor install bbq. but it is up in the air as of right now.

well this at least allows me to touch the truck in a constructive way lol

never thought i would need one of these..

one of the only things that keeps me going is sound clips. This is what it should sound similar too. my motor will sound tighter but you get the over all idea 3inch turbo back.

So motor is just about done, custom head gasket is here, just trying to find time to get it to Doug at Aloha Motors.

Motor is ready waiting to bolt the head to the block all new bearings, rings, full valve job, head and block machine work. So as soon as i can get the rest of the parts delivered and drop the rest of the money i will be bringing the motor home for mount and wire.

Now that everyone is up to date, this is how everything is currently sitting.

    Comments and critiques welcome

handles like a link. cycles 17-18inchs. have put side load at over 60mph and nothing has bent yet. still working on dialing the valving, but im close to having it done. as soon as the motor is back in i will test the new revalve and adjust from there

i own a supra 7mgte and pretty knowledeable about them if you have any questions, if you still need a cps (cam position sensor), check on supraforums.com register to the forum then go to the for sale section can get them all day for $50, anyways you do know about head gasket problem, dont just retorque to 75 lbs with a stock headgasket, you need a METAL HEADGASKET and APR HEAD STUDS, believe me on this one do not cheap out right here , then torque down to 80-90lbs do not cheap out or go any other route you'll learn the hard way, especially if you'll be boosting of 12lbs, i have one of the cars and yes they haul ass but do the steps i said, Ive seen to many blown head gaskets even with less than 500 miles on the motor if you don use metal or go apr head studs, other than that it'll haul ass, if you do upgrade the turbo and retain the ct26 go with a 57 trim, stay away to the 60-1 they dont last long. 57trim puts down 350-370 rwhp on average depending on tune at 15-17 psi on pump gas, on a stock ct26 you can hit around 300rwhp at 12lbs before fuel cut

on another note you should have never went beams i really liked when it was a arm, the back is pretty cool super simple but effective. nice truck.

yea ive done my home work, it was completely ripped apart. and everything was sent to machine. cometic custom made metal headgasket, arp head studs, rc engineering 550cc injectors. all bearings are new from japan, honed the block, new rings. the whole motor was gone through. so everything is new and name brand. i did find a cam position sensor so im good in that department. only thing left is to rebuild the ct26 and pick up an intercooler and lexus afm. then after i break it in i can get it tuned.

the old kit cycled 8inchs clean the rest was garbage. and since a fab guy ran with my deposit on the race kit i wanted i had no funds to do a-arms. beams were my only option. and they handle 10 times better then the last kit.

yea the og glass didnt cover the wheels, and i didnt plan on street legal but i need to break the motor in before i can rip on it. so i will be plating it again, but for now it is a green sticker truck

hmm i see. well id recommend the 57 trim definatly, and i was gonna do the lex afm swap but alot of guys have success and alot of guys everything goes wrong, its a 50/50 chance on the lex afm thing, personally i like the map ecu 1 ($300-375ish) or 2 (700ish i think) set up, you can fine tune the motor so it runs of the intake pressure knowing how much boost the motor is pushing and is very accurate for tuning. either way good luck

and that sucks to hear about the a arms that you got ripped off.

yea once i can find out what trim the turbo i have is i can go from there on a rebuid or buy a new one. wish they made these ball bearing instead of journal bearing. dropping off the head gasket this week. would be stoked to see it back together for pick up next week, but anyone who has had a motor built knows timing is hit or miss on delievery dates
