maybe because the engine cage cross pieces are welded to 1/8" sheet and then tube crunched on with home depot specials with what appears to be no bung or washers. Those plates look like pretty snazzy hammer formed custom jobbies. If they were the proper thickness they'd be damn near impossible to form into that shape by your average joe fabber fabster. Shock mounts look good though.

Pretty sure that looks like a boss on the nut side, and the piece that the crossbars are welded to looks like a piece of larger tubing that's been cut in half. I don't think it looks bad, except for the home depot bolts.

hmm, well that crossmember isnt going anywhere. i guess it could have been a little more beefed up for good measure, but looks to me that its going to do its job as a crossmember.

Other than the cage being at an angle, I think the body style of those older trucks is actually really thick and running it to the cab wasn't a bad idea. I saw an old style bronco roll with the cage welded to the body and it didnt tear at the mounts and those things are heavy as hell. I'm sure it would of been a better idea to do the cage to the frame but those things are tanks.

its never a good idea to mount a cage to the body... period. it essentially bypasses the entire purpose of it and all you end up doing is wasting time and money. there are two main things that a cage does for you and your vehicle. one... its to add to the structural integrity of the vehicle, that cannot, in any way, be achieved by welding it to a rubber mounted piece of 20 gauge sheet metal. the frame is the only way to go. second, in the event of a rollover.... how is that body going to hold up to that? sure the body may not full get destroyed, but they will buckle significantly and then your left with a pile of crap, when if youd just done it to the frame, which is barely any more effort, you would have a perfectly fine vehicle still (at least in the sense of the chasis and main structure of the body being straight). on top of that, someone said that "those things are tanks". the heavier the vehicle, the BETTER the cage needs to be, as they have more mass, and thus will need even more structural rigidity and even more strength.

as for that toyota, although its not a TERRIBLE design, moutning the shocks off the SIDE of the hoop isnt exactly the best way to do it, as its constantly trying to tear the tube where the tab connects, rather than putting it under the tube where it would just be pushing up and against the tube. as for the way it mounts, it looks like its just a piece of tubing cut in half. the other thing, is that the tubes arnt hitting the shock hoop where it needs the support. it needs the support where the force is.... right over the shock. but... really those are minor things considering that its not really a race truck or anything, not bad id say if it was a home-job.
