My first two trucks were seamed mild cages my ranger, held up fine when we rolled it, is it proper?? probably not but it was fun! This site tends to set a "trophy truck" standard on every vehicle here and most of the time its spoiled kids setting that standard. Ive seen rails built out of .095 mild do a cart wheel and barely come out a little tweaked with proper engineering involved. Fact of the matter is this site didnt exsist for most of us involved with the sport back in the day and we had to learn the hard way, when another prerunner showed up in the dez every one had respect for each other. Now everyone has a hard ass know it all additude, shit gets old.
Back To Basics
While I will get criticized on this site if something is not quite perfect, being from Arkansas, I could drive basically anything in this crappy fab thread around and people here would think it was awesome.
Either way I still try to keep my stuff up to dr standards, whether or not I achieve that is debatable.

Let me check the scrap pile after this monsoon season is over. I think I've got some split ERW out there, I've seen it a few times, never under normal use, but as a result of a failure elsewhere I have definitely seen it. Chinese tube blows.
One thing most people either forget, or just plain don't know/understand is that most plate used in offroad is pickled and oiled a36 mild steel, stronger than shitty 1010 mild tube, but has a much lower yield strength than the good 1018 mild steel tube that comes from US foundries. How many LT kits out there are made with mild plate?
With what it costs to cage a truck, it's a bit silly to use seamed mild IMHO, simply because the cost difference is so minimal for a cab cage. I also always prefer DOM for bumpers because it doesn't get scared and dented as easily, and for a bumper like that Raptor has, you're looking at a little over $20 in extra material's cost for the whole bumper and you don't have that fuggly seam ruining the powder-coat on a $1300 bumper.
Go Hard Or Go Home............ But Never Go Home Hard
The purpose of life is not to arrive at the grave with a well preserved body, but to slide in sideways, completely used up, screaming, what a fucking ride~!
Isn't the weld the strongest part of the tube? Book of the piece? Lol
The tubing on my Ranger is mostly Mild with some DOM and a Chromo engine cage. As for things built from plate I'm sure I have all the bases covered, from P&O to cold rolled, to hot rolled and just plain mild. Maybe even some stainless and 4130 in there too. It's a hodge-podge of metals. And my truck will probably instantaniously impload upon touching dirt and kill everyone within a 5 mile radius.
When it comes to building stuff with Mild, I usually put the seam between the inside and side, not quite both. I no longer build stuff for people out of Mild though mainly because it is frowned upon within this industry for some reason.. Maybe because it's not a cool buzz-word, kinda like how TIG is over-used in this industry. Tig welding has a few applications I can see it being beneficial, but the majority of the time something is TIG'd it doesn't need to be and they aren't using it to be beneficial but because it is pretty. My next truck will either be all DOM or Chromo and most likely MIG welded.

not mine or any ive built!
4130 plate FTMFW! haha
but every piece of tube except for 1 that is like 6" long is .120wall mild. when i get around to caging my truck the cab cage will be 100% 4130 and/or DOM but i will still probably end up using some mild for the bed cage because i tend to redo things and i dont want to be cutting out any DOM and when was the last time you saw a properly built bedcage break?
im with kevin on this one though, the offroad industry (or atleast this site) is very overly judge mental and quick to jump to conclusions. someday i want to build a truck breaking every "rule" on this site just to prove a point.
It's the industry as a whole. Very well informed, but poorly educated consumers. They know all the buzz words and what the most correct thing to do is, but not why the good stuff (tig welding, dimple dies, 4130) is good, and what other construction methods are acceptable, they just read it on RDC, so it must be true.
Same reason a lot of decent trucks get posted in this thread, some kid read on DR and RDC that this that or the other thing isn't cool, and therefore must be shitty.
I get the feeling its something that's mid-engine.

eh, it only broke 1 real rule and that was the mild steel rule. my first thought was the piece, then GGs monster.
What would be the point in building something that breaks the rules and sucks? That proves nothing.
there is no point except in my case i just didnt know any better or have access to any better equipment 10 years ago......lol.....ans yes my truck did suck except for the couple times that it won or the couple times that i hucked the shit out of it and drove on or flipped it and kept driving....
as for GG, that dosent count cus that shitbox of an abortion has yes to be finished.
i thought GG too lmao

gotta love the "spray paint over everything under dash height" look
There's gotta be a reason for the door bars.

Yeah, to cover up shitty work.

I'm Dave
the bar welded into the door skin on the drivers side is great
I've seen LOTS of factory stuff that looks "slapped in there." Just because it came from the factory that way does NOT mean it's quality work!
I am a tool whore... and
73-79 Ford fiberglass fenders mold is done! FINALLY some larger flare glass for these trucks!!!
