I couldn't believe this today, this is on a top fuel dragster which gets up to 330mph in 4 seconds. this is on rod fullers Matco, Caterpillar car
this is where the front hoop of the cage attaches
welds were nice though

all drag cars are like that.. belive me, i just quit at a drag shop that built pro mods full time and 10.5 tire cars worked there for a year, all of there cages are built like that, its built to the sfi book.. i would think it spreads the stress of each tube out a little more from the junction, member that a drag car is just like an indy car, everything but the driver takes the stress, in most case, in an accident, there designed with as little tubing/wall thickness as possible to do the job.. they blow apart when the crash at high speeds so that the driver doesnt take the load. all the parts are light, because its harder to stop a heavier object going that fast.. i couldnt believe my eyes at some of the shit i have seen, i dunno how those cars survive as long as they do, but they are two totally different worlds thats for sure.

so these drag car rollcages look something like this then? i couldnt see since most was covered. so i made this to see it in full, i should run some stress tests..
i guess they are safe but im sure they can be alot safer
w
pretty much with the exception well atleast with every car i saw, the diagnol in that box under the funny car cage, it wouldnt meet up with another tube. itd be off set to the side, in bewteen the funny car cage hoop and the upright. def strange shit, but the do the most with the least.. def not the way any desert vehicle should be built.

People use mild steel on bed cages and engine cages... thats fine, they're on a budget. Now on a cab cage why in the hell would you sacifice your safety for some cash? Do you think a legitimate shop owner would risk his business and reputation? NOPE
"Shaking like a dog shitting razorblades waking up next to nothing after dreaming of you and me. Im waking up all alone, waking up so relieved."
1. are you a shop doing customer work? As i read it, its to my understanding that that was coming from a shop. If you are building your own truck in your driveway things are different, such as liability.
2. DOM is not going to cost 3G, try 900-1100
3. Chromo, yes 3G possibly 4G with all the 4130 plate as well.
4. If i crack you up, does that make me funny?

and.... there was just a thread stating that tortuga's cage was mild. not built by vance, but rolled and survived.
pwned
You ever suck dick for some uniball??
i bet they wouldn't do it again. but i don't think its unsafe.
but note i would rather be in a dom cage, and a shop should do what the consumer wants. if thats mild. fuck it.
You ever suck dick for some uniball??
How about Greg Gs yard sale at Barstow, mild held up fine there.
But he has a point about shops building with mild.

As bad as that drive shaft must look, I think they did a good enough job to get them home if they were stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Although not everybody has a vehicle equipped with a welder to get them out of a situation like that. I can see this as being the cheap way out of spending money on a new/replacement driveshaft though.

I have seen some of the rock krawler guys do this as a "strong" upgraded extending drive shaft. They just spray it down with wd40 when they go out and call it a day. It was also on that show "extreme 4x4" as a good way to build a strong driveshaft in your driveway. By no means will that hold up a speed in a desert truck.

I hesitate to even respond to this thread, but I can't stand it anymore.
The problem I see over and over is that there are two types of people on this board - the ones who look at pictures all day and the ones who ACTUALLY BUILD SOMETHING.
Instead of bashing cages that don't look like all the pictures you've seen, why not bash the guys doing something unsafe like driving off road at high speed without any cage or harnesses at all. Instead of harping on a design you've never seen, why not harp on the guy who has 3000 inches of travel but no bump stops or limit straps.
Better yet, instead of trying to prove your worthiness on the internet, go out and ACTUALLY BUILD SOMETHING. Post up the pictures of what you've built, and video of how it works, and then I and we will respect your opinion.

Hey focker! I dont have limit straps or bumps mounted yet on my truck. Bash away!![]()

Personally I would not use a shop the bows to customers and use mild. There really isn't a huge price difference between mild and DOM. Between DOM and 4130 yes there is a large cost difference but you also may see this expense back if and when you go to sell the truck.
Tubing for my F150, which was 4130 2" and misc other sizes was around 2600-2700. We were going to use DOM but I changed my mind and this added about $1000 to the cost of materials. I am glad I did because I am spending the money to have a shop build it and when I go to sell the vehicle it is that much better resale value because of it being built out of 4130.
Dan Vance would no longer build out of mild and fully endorses 4130 as well as others. Helton is a nut job and shouldn't be trustedBut I highly doubt he would build out of mild again.

As far as that drive shaft goes, I use shafts like that on my crawler when I broke one (which happens alot). I always have 3 to 4 of differing lengths and flanges so if other people break there's they don't block a trail. When you have the gearing I do, you twist up alot of junk yard shafts and I find it fun timeing my self to see how long it takes to change one out.......best time was 3:17!!!!!

Ya thats somthing I agree with as well a race truck should be built out of dom or chromo do it once and do it right because that truck will take beating after beating last thing you wanna worry about is the trucks tube work falling apart in a race ....as far as the last thing I said as far as i know that truck was homemade for aDD
hahaha thats sick
4 spline driveshafts have been very common in rockcrawling for at least a decade. (I saw them before I bought my jeep in 97) They are cheap, long travel and dent resistant. They vibrate and clunk like hell, and they are not fond of speed. Typically they are not used in the rear of street driven vehicles. Though I am sure somewhere some nitwit is doing it.

if something happened to just one of the chains while moving at speed, would it cause the quad to turn and roll?
just a question...
mike
this quad is very simular to the one at kartek. the chains run off a jack shaft. if u lost one chain nothing whould happen. it whould be like running a open diff. it is the furthest thing from crappy fab work. lots of ground clarance and a massive motor. ide love to ride one.
