The face of this sport is changing. Solid axles can be stupid fast, too. Dual Purspose FTW.

you could build a helluva buggy on that budget!!

those toyotas running a full frame powered by 22r motors run this race. and they finish well.

There's also a huge difference in building it yourself vs. paying a shop. Lots of average 1400/1450 trucks would be approaching $80-100k if they weren't garage builds.

Hopefully they release it in lots of theaters, would love to check it out on the big screen. The downside to actually being there is that you miss a ton of the action going on all over the place.

there is still a movie after that trailer? I thought that 8 minute trailer just told everything there was to know. why make an 8 minute trailer. 1 min max like bajaflo trailers were always perfect.

to be totally honest. i am anal about that. I have coilovers sitting under my bed and I just need some more money to get my truck ready to rock.

but on a serious side note - 8 minute trailers are not trailers.

Dude, it's rock crawling, of course the trailer had to be double-wide.

Really it looks like they just grabbed cool/funny footage, doubt they have much more than a general story-board and a super-rough cut at this point, making a normal trailer doesn't work at that stage.

I started off-roading as a rock crawler (and was never on this site!), but then I found desert. Personally all I think KOH or any other hybrid sport that doesn't make that much sense is make it more expensive to rock crawl. No one (and I mean no one) wants to watch a shitty build 4x4 go 35mph in the desert. Sure the $300,000 buggys look fun, but the rest don't!

Thats why there were thousands in the rocks, and two people watching the desert section. I support all things racing in a sense, but this is silly.

And to the second video of the solid axle testing...are you kidding? My stock bug was faster than that and under more control...and I had $4000 total into it! I love crawling (and miss it) but I think more rock crawler fans go to this race than desert fans.

Oh and the fans make the mexican's on Zoo Road look like rocket scientists compared to some of the people in those rocks!

Okay personal rant over, I guess I had higher hopes.

FYI... Shannon Campbell ran THIS rock crawler:

in a (I believe) BITD race in class 1, and was whoopin that ass for a bit until he broke. It does unbelievably well. This is a new concept, and like any sport, is about evolution.

... and none of them were fast. I'm all for new sports and developing new ways to go fast, but when you get right down to it, KOH cars are not fast in the desert. Shannon does allright, but can't keep a tranny together, and if you can't finish, you can't win. In the couple desert races he's finished, he's been just a bit faster than Jeepspeeds. Shannon is building a real desert car for a reason. Cole's new IFS car is ultra-bling, but hasn't finished a race yet, they're claiming TT/1car speeds in the desert, but Herrera has chased it in the Grinder and said he had no problems keeping up, and as fast as the Grinder is, it's not a TT and even with Herrera's skills behind the wheel, it can't hang with legit TTs and Class 1s.

Easy Rick's buggy (the one in the testing video) works about the best of any of the KOH buggies in the desert, but compared to a true desert truck, it's painfully slow.

KOH is a bad-ass event, but the desert sections are not what makes for great spectating, it's the rock sections IMO. There's still plenty of rock guys who think they can overall V2R or the B1K because they did 120mph during KOH, but that's lakebed speeds, which don't count, hell I've done 70 on Means in low range, and ask anybody, the Rover is very unfast.

If the wife and I had are belts on I would have mashed all over that pos! Rock crawling is cool and all, But even the fastest rock rigs in the dez sections looked to have the speeds and handling characteristics of a 9 car.

I wouldn’t expect any of the KOH buggies to hang with a TT or 1 car in the desert. I think you misunderstood my point. I’m just saying they raced in a desert race. I’m not positive but I think a couple even finished. The fact they are slower than a TT doesn’t make them any less of a race vehicle. If that is the case we could get rid of all classes that are slower than TT. I actually really like the direction that desert racing has taken rock crawling. It seems to have brought in sponsors and money that wouldn't have paid attention otherwise.

Everyone can always knock it down, complain and belittle something they aren't a part of. The fact is, a KOH style car is a rock crawler that can go fast (relative to other crawlers).... They ARE NOT trophy trucks that can rock crawl. I will admit that some have claimed that, but everyone knows these buggies can't mash 4 foot TT whoops, except for maybe two. However, a TT can't crawl up a 6 foot ledge.

Being good at just one is obviously cheaper. However, being able to do both is fun. I'm just speaking from my personal recreational experience, but having something that can rock crawl and go semi-fast is awesome. I've had a few rides in Randy Slawson's KOH buggy and I've never had more fun. I've also had a few rides, and co-drove, in a couple 1450 trucks. They don't compare.

Each racer has their place. The evolution of the sport is the benefit. The developments from this race are priceless.

Who the fuck cares if they aren't as fast as a TT. We know they aren't. Until you get the chance to ride in a fast rock crawler (again, relative) don't knock it.

It really boils down to what you like. I like both, some like just one. As long as you are in the desert and you are supporting our country by helping the little guy (i.e. independent fab shops, distributors, etc.) WHO CARES! /rant

In my opinion, a KOH vehicle has a chance to finish any desert race it enters. But no desert racing vehicle has any chance of finishing king of the hammers. They're not purpose built but instead built to do it all. I for one think they're pretty badass myself.

    i agree 100%

more of a fact that opinion though

KOH is kinda like a national hare n hound for a 4 wheeled vehicle

it's obvious a hammer buggy wont have the same speed in the open desert as a desert truck but it can do it.

i don't see the need to talk shit on them and how they handle.
i never talked shit on the way a 1450 truck or class 5 buggy goes up the ledges at backdoor-wait... it can't even get to them

when it comes down to it. the ultimate offroad vehicle is the motorcycle

x2. Damn it! Haha. They really are the most versatile. Except they don't have V8s.

The only problem with KOH is how singular it is. There is no other race like it, which is why it's cool the Ultra 4 series is up and running. Those races are going to push the cars to be faster.
