Anyone?
You are way to concerned about which 5.0/302 you get...

You're probably going to want to rebuild one soon anyways from the vehicles you are looking at. Just go pick one up and quit making it so complicated. The f100 idea sounds pretty sweet because you can have a 9" with it. If your truck has an 8.8, that 9" will do you a lot more then some forged pistons.

well i think im going to buy my buddies 86 5.0 HO mustang. im really only trying to decide between three different options. I have my buddy who will sell me his whole car for $450, or a 87 thunderbird 5.0 with aod for $400, or a f100 for $1000.
I say buy the f100. it has the 9 inch the c4 and the 302. trust me the difference between all these 302's is small. But the f100 and take the drivetrain out and call it good.

I would do the f100 as well. you can resell it or scrap for a couple hundred bucks once you take the drivetrain out of it..

what trans is in the mustang? If this isnt a race only vehicle id probably give an AOD a shot, extra gear is nice.
I'd try the AOD as well. They can't be built to handle quite a bit of power, and overdrive is nice to have..

And sorry I'm not getting the complete mustang. I'm just getting the engine out of it for 200. He wants another 200 for the aod, but I'm thinking I should just get the c6 for the same price. Thoughts? I am also continplating getting the same manual trans as thomas.
how much power do you plan on the engine eventually making? if you're going to keep it less then 500hp, the AOD will do fine if built properly. I would go the AOD route because having overdrive is nice. Like doing Vegas to caliente in the dirt the whole way, it's all high speed stuff, and cruising at 90mph would've gotten old really fast if I hadn't had an overdrive transmission...
v8 makes enough power to not need a manual trans, and with the right torque converter they don't rob nearly as much power as Thomas is making you think...

I vote 5spd or AOD.
Nice thing about a manual is you bolt it in and go. no worrying about coolers, plumbing, valves bodies, what torque converter etc. when it blows up you bolt on another one and go without thinking about a million different options.

the parts are cheap and it really isn't hard to go through an automatic trans yourself. it's $1,000 in parts for a good rebuild kit, valvebody, and the 4r70w parts...

If you can't afford that, or don't think you can go through it yourself, I would go with a c6. you can get from broader that will last a long time for $1200...lol

I can do it myself, and I have a shop to do it in, but I dont have 1000 for parts olus the cost of the aod. I'm thinking the m5r2 is going to be the best route, that way I can just get it to hit the dirt faster, plus I'm going to get a set of gr40p heads and a f303 or e303 cam, so my money is dwindling away lol
Do you really understand the amount of money it's going to take to get this thing running? Going with a carb set up, new fuel pump, carb jetting, headers, remote oil filter mount, engine mounts, trans mount, drive shaft mods, wiring, starter, throttle cable, (if auto) shifter, cable, trans coolers, (if manual) clutch, shifter, and other random misc things

Yup I have all of it accounted for plus more, and I decided today that im just going to make the engine mounts and trans x member at work. I just don't want to spend that much on a trans at the moment. I have the money to do it, but i am trying to keep the cost low.
the AOD will hold up with a stock engine. the trans just has to get built when the engine does...

How many miles are on the rebuild? Remember that the 302 is a thin wall casting and .030-.040 is about as much as you are going to want to go on the block. An E303 is a decent cam that's what I'm running in my Cobra. It provides power at a low RPM and will pull strong to 5,800 rpms. Set the rev limit at 6,000 rpms and the engine will last for a long time. I have around 80,000 miles on mine running 10-12 psi of boost.
rather than start a new post.. on the same subject. would this deal be a fair deal? '84 302 and AOD trans $500 1984 ford 302
id probably offer a little less. but i will be converting to a carb setup regardless since emissions crap around here does not matter
.
The '84 was a nonroller engine if that matters to you.
