I recommend against from buying one with any modifications, unless you know the person you're buying from and know they didn't beat on it and took care of it. Best bet is to find one that is completely stock...my friend lucked out and got one from an old lady that used it mainly to haul her dogs around, it was a 2004 wagon.
Any model year is great...it's up to you and looks on that.
I got my 2002 about 3 years ago from a friend of a friend and knew that he took care of his cars. I do all my own work so I upgraded almost everything except for the engine and transmission, and constantly do the maintenance work like changing diff/trans fluids, brake fluid, etc. I've had no problem with mine and I just hit 120k miles...I'm running a modified Stage 2 setup with just over 320hp/tq at the crank on the oem 2.0 WRX motor.
Random little problems happen, just as any car, but for what I put mine though it's been a tank. I've tracked it once this summer and ran 8 autocross events since last spring and nothing happened through it all. I did in the past have an O2 sensor go but that's a simple replacement, and recently I had the oil line to the turbo get a tiny crack but enough to drip oil onto the exhaust and make a horrible white cloud of smoke trail behind you...again, another fairly simple fix with a new line.

Private sellers will be looking to get a high selling cost and most will be modified. Keep checking at dealers to look for a traded in one. 2002's through 2005 have the 2.0 L motor, and 2006+ have a 2.5 L. All STI's have the 2.5 L. The fuel mileage on the 2.0 will be a bit better but he 2.5 gives you more power as expected. A great condition one for under 10K is a good deal for a WRX, and an STI under 18K. Everyone I know that has one has over 100k miles and no problems. Check to see if the timing belt was replaced as well as all other maintenance.

New here but figured i would post up my STI. Just had it rebuilt at Rocket Rally Racing in Squamish, British Columbia earlier this year. It is on a very conservative tune as i want to drive this thing in all weather safely. 350AWHP on 91 octane with 50/50 meth/water mix. It goes pretty damn good! Also get reasonable millage if i keep my foot out of the throttle, low-mid 20mpg.

Heres a little list of whats in it..

    EJ257 Assembled Stock Short Block
    Perrin gt3076R rotated turbo kit
STI Clutch Kit - HD PP full face disc, Re-surfaced Flywheel
    Pauter 5.135 Rods 4340
    JE STI 8.5:1 KIT / 3917-3110-5137-1209 99.5MM
ARP Subaru EJ205/207/257 Head Stud Kit
HAWK HPS brake pads all around
    Crawford Air/Oil Separator
    DW 850cc injectors
    NGK Plugs Iridium LFR7AIX - EJ257
Blow through maf sensor with perrin cold air intake
    Perrin front mount intercooler
    Walbro 255lph fuel pump
Perrin catless downpipe and Borla hush cat back exhaust.
Inovate wideband 02 with lambda harness
Aquamist HFS-6 High Flow System Water/Meth Injection System
    Spec C STI 12L tank
    3" catback Borla HUSH exhaust

Here is a little video, 0-125mph... I just stopped at 125, it will pull hard all they to 160 if you feel ambitious. Even there it still has more however i beleive the gears limit it to a little under 170.

Letting off the throttle in 6th will result in this ~24" flame out the back

Couple little videos of how it sounds..

Yery nice! Good work! I'm happy to see someone with a built motor...I'm just not lucky enough right now to have the $$$$ for it but want it bad.
