Picking up my explorer tomorrow..Its a 91 4WD model..Has no front end as far as I know of..

I look mainly into 2WD trucks, hence why I got rid of my Ranger..But this truck was a great deal so couldnt pass it up..

Wondering what my options were for a mildly built front end..What could I have done to the beams if I bought a stock setup?
Of course I like a low profile so I would like to have an extended beam setup..Nothing too crazy like the Dakota tho..

    Thanx

Naw I still have it..Its getting the spindle re-fabbed right now, then it'll be back on the road..

The Explorer is going to be my DD while the Dakota under goes extra work and close to done..Then I'll probably sell the Explorer but until then I want a little something under it for now, cant stand stock..

No front end as in stock, or no front end as in its on jackstands? If nothing at all go Giant equal length, they make mounts for the 4wd.

Ya know as far as I know its no front end period..Its sitting on jackstands..Been awhile since Ive seen it..

And Im not sure if Im getting the stock setup with it or not..I know he was taking the fucked up beams it had off and I think he mentioned he was putting it back to stock..But I wont know for sure until tomorrow..

I did check out Giant tho already..Great stuff but a little pricey for me right now since my main focus is the Dakota..I was hoping if I get the stock beams I can get those worked on instead?

Those won't necessarily work with 4wd mounts.

No question, just pointing out that that particular kit may not work perfect.

Because a 2wd and 4wd don't have the same mounts.

building my 4x4 exploder took a lot of time and money, like all of the trucks on this site....and mine aint even close!!!

My two cents is to look for used shit on here or on RDC...hell I just sold some stock width bent beams on here a few weeks ago! I found camburg buckets on RDC, beams from a buddy, radius arms from kartek (rape) and everything else new or fabbed. Just take your time and look out for good deals since you are on a tight budget...or hit up 87-Ranger, hear he makes some decent 4x4 beams from what I've seen

It is 442am and I am eating microwaveable mashed potatoes. they are fucking nasty and getting thrown out (after one last bite) and i am off to bed Ohhhh what Bud Ice and Jim Beam will do to a man hahaha

A buddy of mine is running the Camburg entry level system on his ranger, which is similar to the explorer set-up. He has had that set-up on his truck for years now and it has never failed him. If you're looking for a moderately priced kit - look no further than the Camburg Entry level system. Not to mention, the entry level system can be upgraded down the road should you decide to keep the sploder

I used an Autofab kit on my Explorer. Their kit uses custom axle pivot brackets that allow more bump and droop travel before axle-shaft bind.

Hey I'm comfortable enough with my masculinity to use pink coils! LOL. The color in the first pic is way off & they definitely look pink.

That front end is stock width. If you're looking into a widened front end for your Explorer check out Autofab's F150/Bronco TTB conversion for Ranger based 4wds. It ends up being about 4" wider per side and the cost is comparable to widened D35 (stock Explorer) front ends.

If you are wanting to retain the 4wd, and be wider then stock, then you are gonna be droppin some coin.

SteveG (Mr. Autofab) likes to chime in on every 4x4 explorer topic there is...he claims that there are no axleshaft clearance issues on this kit, which would be very nice. In the next life I will check out Autofab Steve I promise...

The stock width Camburg beams I used to have on my truck showed up with axleshaft clearance issues that required me to port out the opening in the passenger side beam a bit. Also, the U-joint really like to max out on hardly any articulation. Just my experiences here...

I now have the widened ones and havent noticed any clearance problems, but I haven't relly checked either, and my u-joints on the passenger side stub-shaft are clearanced a bit for more articulation, and the u-joint caps are tacked on so they won't blow out like they used to....again, just some issues I experienced with my kit.

Other than that the beams have held up fine. I recommend NOT mounting the limit straps off of the radius arm on 4wd Camburg models, as the weight of the beam/outers/tire (especially on the drivers pumpkin side) will cause a shearing effect on the radius arm ears that fit over the beam. A better plan with less moment about these tabs resulting in less breakage is to mount the straps off the beam. The reason I say this is my radius arm sheared off at the beam with the straps mounted off the arm.

Long post, but a good summary of what I've learned with the setups I have used.

Everytime I hear about all these issues I just cringe. I've never had to clearance yokes, I've never had axleshaft problems and I've certainly never had timit straps cause issues with radius arms. Oh, and having to tack-weld the bearing caps on the u-joints??? that's just plain nuts!

On both My D35 and fullsize D44 kits the limit straps were mounted on the radius arm like Autofab said to do.

The Explorer: Note the reinforcing on the backside of the axle-housing. A must if you're going to jumping your TTB truck.

The welds on the caps probly arent necessary on my newer setup, but the problem was evident with my caps popping out before, so I tacked them...then the same stubshaft was swapped into my widened beams that are on there now.

Where is that reinforcing on the back of the axlehousing, got a pic? Maybe I just didnt notice it before in your pics. I see the passenger side beam is plated in on the backside tho, thats nice.

I'm with Steve on this one...that's what made me seek out an autofab kit, I wanted something I could bolt on and forget about. That's been my experience with the autofab kit...no clearancing, binding, u-joint problems, radius arms snapping. It's the best choice I've made for my truck. Reliable 4wd.

Here's a pic of the back of my beams. Hard to see the plating on the driver's side beam, it's right against the back of the beam.

So you guys basically just double plated the drivers beam kinda? As in tossed in another layer of support in front of the axle shaft?
