do you mean you really cant turn it, or that its really hard to? without power steering, its really hard to turn the wheel when youre not moving.
if you really cant turn the wheel, i dont think its your PS system

your power steering fluid might be low, or your belt could just be loose causing that screaming sound you mentioned.

yeah my 2000 ranger did that for a while. i did a power steering flush at work and i couldn't believe how dirty the fluid was that came out of it. try that and see if that doesn't help your solution any.

It sounds like you just need to get your system purged and flushed. But before you do that, check your belts, hose connections, etc. Also you could try to get any air bubbles by turning the wheel full both ways to full lock at least 10 times as fast as you can. Sometimes it's easier to disconnect the steering linkage from the pitman arm so you can turn it faster make sure the engine is running.

If after doing the purging thing and the fluid is foamy or milky you need to replace it.

thought i'd bump this instead of creating a new thread.

my 95 ranger came with manual steering. i just installed pump, bracket, power steering gear, hoses. all used parts. now my pump is loud as hell. i rebuilt the pump with new seals so it doesn't leak at all now. but when turning it gets really loud. granted i am running 35's but does any one else have problems with there pumps running big tires? after reading the info above it sounds like it could use a flush because the old fluid looked milky. might get it done this weekend.

i've got 32x11.5 and it can turn them without much effort. i can back out of a spot, stop/turn to full lock the other direction without much noise from my system except for the normal wurring noise of the pump.

what i did was i already had a small pump so i sucked all the bad shit out and put new fluid in and therefore i would not have to bleed it.
