Are you sure on that? I was always under the impression it was by the frame, and then the cab but only if the frame vin cannot be found. If he has the title with matching vin on the frame, I still think he is smog exempt.

OOwballer - Where did you get the cab, they are almost impossible to come across. When I built mine, I gave up and bought the whole truck.

Here is a little motivation for anyone considering picking this rare deal up, T-100 with tundra 4.7.

motorhead: I got the cab from dave (cakeordeath) on here, you have a very nice truck, i wish i could have built this to be similiar to yours.

I was always under the impression that the title follows the frame. and i have all of the vins/stickers/plates with id #'s from the original cab which i removed before it was destroyed and the vin on the frame matches the title. this shouldnt be any problem

Should be fine with just the cab. Especially if you can swap the vin to the old one that goes with the frame.

I think to "legally" do it - you need to report it to the DMV as a cab swap and then show proof of ownership of both vehicles. A receipt from a junk yard or wherever for purchasing the cab would be fine.

Most people don't go through this hassle though, and just run the old title.

Problem is when mr. Officer runs the plate for some reason or another and he sees "1974 Toyota pickup" come up on his computer and yet he sees a new-ish looking pick-up truck in front of him... Of course he will start inspecting it and asking questions.

Whoever does this better have copies of BOTH titles, receipts, whatever in the cab so as to prove you aren't trying to pull one over on the DMV.

It can be done - it's just not as problem free as most people pretend it is.

Aww, don't give up on this project yet! I picked up my '72 just before you got yours and was stoked that somebody might go through the DMV hassle before me. Haven't done much to mine except drop a V-8 in. I still need to transfer the truck into my name!
