it broke at the splines. and the other side started to twist already. any idea what would cause that?

the splines on those axles are not rolled, they are cut into the axle. This is a weaker way of getting it done which works but in your case, you are beyond what that type of process done to them can handle. Also, since the splines are the same size as the axle, the splines are more likely to give as the actual base circle (valley of each spline) is smaller than the actual diameter of the axle. kind of a two fold issue going on there.

makes sense. im told the 35 spline axles are much stronger and should be fine for my application. well see i guess!
