that AN fitting is just the return from the surge tank instead of putting it in the lower rad hose. easier/cleaner way to go about it.
I can see that if it had a small line going to it from the top of the radiator too. Otherwise it would be damn near impossible to fill. Also isolates the cap from the high pressure side of the radiator.

Speaking of adding caps, you cant put it on the top above the rad inlet.

That’s what a surge tank requires. Small line at the top (steam vent) and a large one at the bottom by or on the lower road hose.
