Had this thing close to a couple years and a lot has changed but soon I’ll finally be starting on setting it up the way I’ve always wanted. Bought it nearly bone stock to commute from Jamul to San Marcos 5 days a week for school, so my initial plans for it were far different than they are now. Anyway I studied and slept in the back of that thing in my schools parking garage between classes more times than I can remember, and during that time I did some minor things to make it more reliable, comfortable, and kinda cool. I’ve tried to sell it but I can never really bring myself to part with it.. so originally the plan was to keep it 99% stock, now that I no longer need to commute to CSUSM I want to maintain a simple clean approach but make more changes to benefit off road prowess and make it a more capable road trip rig. So currently it sits on 31” BFG KO’s, factory steelies, stock beams, radius arms, and coils with coil spacers 5100s and add-a-leaves. Oddly enough it has an original 7.5 with 4.10s and a limited slip, which has been decent up to this point even with the stock but 2.9/auto but I need a bit more.
The plan now is:
-junkyard Expo 8.8 with factory discs, regear to 4.56s(?) with some sort of selectable locker or other traction aid
-2.25 shocks under the bed
-change out the leaves and shackles.. the lower the better
-extended braided steel brake lines all around
-bent stock width or 3” over beams, extended radius arms, and later ranger dual piston calipers
-gonna try and run some 3” James Duff coils I got from a buddy with single 5100s on each side, but if that doesn’t work I’ll move to 4” coils
-move up to a newer set of 31” or 32”, probably will stick with the retro steelies unless I find something cool
-some sort of amber LED fog lights
-marching suspension seats adapted to stock sliders, with provisions for a 4pt harness
-steering wheel quick release
-some sort of simple but mild muffler to help the 2.9 exhale

That’s just the ‘performance oriented’ stuff I can think of right now, I wanna keep this thing 2wd and stick with the stock 2.9 as long as I can, and plan to take it from San Diego to Colorado soon so it has to stay simple and reliable.

I’m gonna sell the stock rear bumper and seats, and maybe the swaggy old school Beard bucket once I get a matching pair or tweed or suede seats. Hoping I can fit these shocks out back without much work. Got something in mind for a a rear bumper/spare mount setup.. more on that later

Making this bumper off a Ranger fit, fun fact Bronco II bumper mount holes and Ranger bumper mount holes don’t match.. at least in this case. No problem, nothing a harbor freight grinder and some drilling can’t fix!

So more on that spare mount setup I mentioned, since I started messing with this bumper I’ve envisioned something like this, a single full-size spare cradled in the center of the bumper, held by a strap. Yes I’ll have to remove the spare every time I wanna open the hatch but I don’t do that often and it’s more secure than a rattly tiregate

All bolted up, and bedsides trimmed to match. Had enough room to put the factory filler plate back in to cover most of the wiring and crap for the taillights. Itchin to get started on the suspension.. anyone got some cheap bent beams and/or radius arms they wanna sell me? Haha
