Anyone know why we need to weld a cap in there? Is it more surface area for the weld or something? Instead of just being a butt weld on the edge of the tube???

The idea is that it keeps the tube from deforming under load more effectively which improves the strength and rigidity of the joint.

Because that's how Dump from the Herbst shop showed it being done years ago. (honestly, that's my guess as to why people are doing it in general now these days for the most part...)

I found some structural engineering white papers that advocated the “herbst/dump easter egg bulkhead miter technique”.

I think I posted links to them somewhere in FasterNU’s build threads...

That is usually the place I don't like mitered tubes, but with that second tube coming down it looks much better, and should really beef it up.
